Our contribution to sustainable mobility

Roads will remain a key part of mobility in Europe. But the backlog of infrastructure repairs is enormous. In Germany alone, around 25,000 kilometres of long-distance roads need to be repaired or renewed. STRABAG works with clients on resource-efficient solutions such as asphalt recycling to keep raw materials in circulation on a large scale. We are also advancing innovative mobility concepts, for example by testing inductive charging systems for electric vehicles together with Electreon. Modern, connected transport infrastructure is an important foundation for the sustainable mobility of tomorrow. Take, for example, the new U5 subway line in Hamburg, which - with its fully automated operation - is set to become a key element of the mobility transition in the Hanseatic city: STRABAG subsidiary ZÜBLIN is playing a leading role in the construction of one of Germany’s largest ongoing public transportation infrastructure projects.

At a glance

  • Need for infrastructure regeneration

    According to government figures, just over 17,000 kilometres of railway track, 18,000 bridges and just under 25,000 kilometres of motorways in Germany are in urgent need of repair.

  • Planned investment drive

    The German Government has announced an investment drive for infrastructure and climate neutrality in Germany and intends to set up a special fund totalling 500 billion euros, spread over twelve years, to finance this.  
     
    According to the plan, more than 34 billion euros are to be invested in roads, railways and waterways in 2026 alone.

  • Outdated waterways

    More than half of the flood defences and around 60 per cent of the lock systems on German waterways were built before 1950 and are now reaching their technical limits. (Source)

People and goods should continue to be transported reliably, safely and in a climate-friendly manner in the future. This requires new approaches to the construction, refurbishment and operation of infrastructure. These examples illustrate what sustainable mobility looks like in practice.

Railway refurbishment between Hamburg and Berlin

U5 Hamburg

The new U5 in Hamburg is being built in accordance with a CO₂ reduction plan that is reviewed on a regular basis. The aim is to reduce CO₂ emissions during the construction of the underground line by 70 per cent compared with conventional construction methods.
